Coverage and plans

Find out what the policy covers, the differences between plans, what the waiting period/co-payment/limit mean, and what is excluded from coverage.

What does dog and cat insurance cover?

Your pet's health, specifically:

  • Treatment costs after an accident or illness – from vet visits, tests, and medications to surgery and hospitalisation. Pre-existing conditions don't disqualify you from insurance, but the policy won't cover treatment costs for illnesses that occurred before the policy was taken out. The exception is exacerbations of chronic conditions, which are covered under the Plus and Premium plans. The highest plan also includes selected preventive and grooming treatments.
  • Costs related to death – euthanasia, cremation (group or individual), burial, transport of the remains from the place of euthanasia.
  • Assistance costs – substitute care when you're hospitalised or attending a close relative's funeral, and in higher plans: search for a lost pet and a behaviourist consultation.
  • Owner's third-party liability – compensation for third parties harmed when your pet bites, knocks over, or damages something belonging to someone else.
  • Legal protection – lawyer's support and coverage of legal costs when things get complicated.

The scope depends on the plan you choose. Worth remembering – so there are no surprises later.

What's the difference between plans and which should I choose?

The biggest difference? Chronic conditions and greater protection for you – liability and legal help.

Standard – for sudden illnesses and accidents. The bare minimum. Treatment costs are covered up to 5,000 PLN, with a 1,000 PLN limit per illness. Chronic conditions are not covered. Also includes basic death support and basic assistance costs.

Plus – treatment cost sum insured of your choice: 15,000 PLN or 25,000 PLN. Also covers chronic conditions: those diagnosed during the coverage period, as well as exacerbations of a condition diagnosed before the policy. You can also add death support, owner assistance, and liability insurance – in case your pet causes damage to someone else: bites, scratches, knocks someone over, or damages their property.

Premium – our full package option: 50,000 PLN treatment costs with a higher sub-limit for self-administered medications (2,500 PLN). Also up to 500 PLN for preventive care, dental treatment and daily grooming, e.g. tartar removal, ear cleaning or nail trimming, higher liability coverage and additionally legal protection when things get serious.

Does insurance cover chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or allergies?

Yes and no:

  • We won't cover treatment costs for illnesses or injuries that occurred before the policy was taken out (regardless of plan).
  • The Standard plan does not cover treatment of chronic conditions.
  • The Plus and Premium plans cover treatment of chronic conditions diagnosed during the policy period (after the waiting period). If a chronic condition was known before the policy was taken out, we cover the costs of treating its exacerbations that occur during the policy period.

What are the waiting period, co-payment, and annual limit?

Three terms you need to know before the first claim. Your pet doesn't need to know them. Fair, right?

Waiting period (60 days) The period from the start of the policy during which treatment costs and death-related costs due to illness are not yet covered. It also means that a condition detected during the waiting period will not be covered after it ends either. However, if the dog breaks a paw or the cat swallows a toy, the waiting period does not apply. When renewing the policy, the waiting period does not restart.

Co-payment (20%) Simply your share of the treatment costs – a little you, mostly us. Example: Treatment costs 1,000 PLN. We pay you back 800 PLN, you cover 200 PLN out of pocket. The co-payment does not apply to: self-administered medications, chemotherapy, and preventive/hygiene treatments in the highest plan.

Annual limit (sum insured) The maximum amount we can pay out for treatment within one policy year. Within this, smaller limits apply to specific expenses, e.g. 1,000 PLN for medications to be given at home (2,500 PLN in Premium) and 1,000 PLN for chemotherapy. Once the limit is reached, treatment cost coverage stops until the end of that policy year. Then the counter resets when the policy is renewed for the next period.

What is excluded from insurance – what treatment costs won't be reimbursed?

Insurance protects against unpredictable events – it doesn't replace all care costs. We don't cover, among others:

  • Treatment of behavioural disorders.
  • Vaccinations other than recommended ones, deworming, anti-parasite prophylaxis (routine, planned costs).
  • Allergy tests.
  • Costs related to reproduction, pregnancy and childbirth (except pregnancy complications).
  • Anti-flea treatment and tick removal (but treatment of diseases caused by tick bites is covered).
  • Vitamins, supplements, cosmetics, and specialist food (even if recommended by a vet; exception – feeding during hospitalisation).
  • Rehabilitation and purchase of prosthetics.
  • Home vet visits.
  • Sterilisation and castration not related to illness or accident.
  • Radiotherapy.
  • Plastic surgery and organ transplants.
  • Post-mortem examination.
  • Treatment of complications from not following the vet's instructions.

The Premium plan is the only one that covers some preventive, dental, cosmetic, and hygiene costs up to a combined limit of 500 PLN.

Does insurance cover situations where my pet bit a neighbor or knocked someone over on a walk?

Yes, but not in the Standard plan. Choose the Plus or Premium plan and you get liability insurance that kicks in when your pet causes damage to someone else (not to you – that would be too easy). The insurance covers:

  • Treatment costs for a person bitten or scratched – we don't ask why your pet was upset.
  • Compensation for damaged property.
  • Damage caused to another animal – for example, because it gave the wrong look.
  • Compensation for causing a traffic accident.

And all of this also applies when the pet is in the care of family, domestic help, or a pet sitter. All of Europe is covered, and countries located partly in Europe and partly in Asia, like Turkey, count as European.

Liability insurance does not cover damage caused to the policyholder's close relatives or damage caused intentionally.

Is treatment abroad covered by insurance?

Treatment costs are covered in Poland only. Liability insurance and death-related costs are also covered in Europe.

Is treatment for tick-borne diseases (e.g. babesiosis) covered by insurance?

Yes, but:

  • Treatment of tick-bite-transmitted diseases (babesiosis, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis) – yes.
  • Anti-tick prophylaxis and tick removal (collars, drops, tablets, a visit for tick removal) – no.

Babesiosis treatment in dogs often costs 1,500–4,000 PLN (hospitalisation, drips, diagnostics). Prevention is on you – but when it fails, we'll help.

My pet suddenly changed behavior – will the policy cover a behaviourist consultation?

Yes, but not in the Standard plan – these matters are covered in the Plus and Premium plans:

  • The behavioural change has persisted for at least 7 days – e.g. aggression towards people or animals, fearfulness, apathy, destruction of objects, soiling, persistent barking or howling, eating disorders, self-harm.
  • Reimbursement of up to 500 PLN for one consultation – in person or remote.
  • The consultation must take place within 60 days of the behavioural change occurring.

Does liability insurance apply when the pet is in the care of a pet sitter, family, or pet hotel?

Yes. Without you around, the pet might be naughtier, so liability protection applies when it is in the care of:

  • A close relative – spouse, partner, parents, children, siblings, in-laws.
  • Domestic help – e.g. a carer, housekeeper, dog walker.
  • A person temporarily entrusted with care – a pet sitter, friend, neighbour.
