What does dog and cat insurance cover?

Your pet's health, specifically: - Treatment costs after an accident or illness – from vet visits, tests and medication to surgery and clinic stays. Pre-existing conditions don't disqualify your pet from insurance, but the policy won't cover treatment for illnesses that existed before the policy was taken out. The exception is flare-ups of chronic conditions, which are covered under the Plus and Premium plans. The highest plan also includes selected preventive and grooming procedures. - Death-related costs – euthanasia, cremation (group or individual), burial, transport of remains from the place of euthanasia. - Help costs – substitute care when you are hospitalised or attending a close family member's funeral, and with higher plans: lost pet search and a behavioural specialist consultation. - Pet owner's liability – compensation for third parties injured when your pet bites, knocks someone over or causes damage. - Legal expenses insurance – legal support and coverage of legal costs when the matter gets out of hand. The scope depends on the plan chosen. Bear in mind – and this is important, so there are no surprises – that it does.

Does insurance cover chronic conditions, e.g. diabetes, heart disease or allergies?

Yes and no: - We won't cover treatment costs for conditions or injuries that occurred before the insurance was taken out (regardless of plan). - The Standard plan does not cover treatment of chronic conditions. - The Plus and Premium plans cover treatment of chronic conditions diagnosed during the policy period (after the waiting period). If a chronic condition was known before the policy was taken out, we cover treatment costs for flare-ups that occur during the policy period.

Is treatment abroad covered by the insurance?

Treatment costs are covered in Poland only; liability and death costs are also covered in Europe.

Which animals can be insured?

Breed doesn't matter, but these things do: - Age: at least 7 weeks old and under 8 years old. - Identification: an implanted microchip or health record booklet. For the Plus plan with 25,000 PLN treatment costs and the Premium plan, a microchip is mandatory. - Recommended vaccinations: must be up to date. We insure guide dogs, assistance dogs and dogs used in animal-assisted therapy. We will not insure service dogs (including Police, military, Border Guard, customs, rescue services, Intelligence Agency), animals kept for scientific or educational purposes, or animals that have ever taken part in hunting or fighting.

Do I need to microchip my pet?

A health record booklet or an implanted microchip is sufficient to take out the policy. A microchip is mandatory for the Plus and Premium plans. If it is a microchip: - It must have a 15-digit number compliant with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 standards. - The animal should be registered in one of the registries – ideally the National Registry of Marked Dogs and Cats. When the microchipping and registration obligation comes into force for a given animal, marking and registry entry will become a mandatory condition of insurance. It's worth microchipping your pet now – why wait when it will be required anyway?

Can I insure a dog or cat adopted from a shelter?

Absolutely! There's no requirement to purchase from a breeder or have a pedigree. You can insure an animal adopted from a shelter, a foundation or a private individual.

How do I make a claim when my pet falls ill or has an accident?

- Step one – get help for your pet and collect all documentation, receipts and invoices. Then report within 7 days to kontakt@pzu.pl. - You'll need the policy number, health record booklet and/or microchip number. - Send all scanned documents to PZU, receive a claim number and a dedicated handler who will take care of the matter. - And most importantly – payout within 30 days of the claim. When everything is complete, it should be faster. Just a reminder so there are no surprises – 20% co-payment. A little from you, most from us.
