What is tenant insurance and what does it cover?

Tenant insurance is for people who are renting a property. At simpl.rent together with PZU we offer 3 insurance bundles containing different scopes of cover and guaranteed sums. Each includes tenant liability insurance. This insurance covers damage caused accidentally and suddenly to third parties (e.g. the landlord) by the tenant, their close ones or a pet.

What are examples of claims covered by tenant insurance?

- A glass fell while being taken from the cupboard onto the induction hob and broke it. - Your dog tore up the sofa belonging to the landlord. - While slipping in the shower you damaged the door. - A plant pot fell from your balcony and destroyed someone's car. - A tap accidentally left running flooded the property as well as the downstairs apartment. - Your child broke a car window in the car park with a ball. - While cycling you lost your balance and accidentally knocked into a pedestrian.

Does tenant insurance replace the deposit?

Tenant liability insurance is an additional form of security but does not replace the deposit. It can be a source of covering damage and repair costs in the apartment, but not all of them. In Poland it is generally accepted that the deposit has a broader role – it can cover all other dues (including unpaid utility bills, outstanding rent, interest on these obligations, costs of intentional damage).

Can I purchase tenant insurance during an ongoing tenancy?

Yes, tenant insurance can be purchased at any time during the tenancy. It's worth remembering that insurance does not work retroactively, but from the moment of purchase for a set period – i.e. insurance cannot be purchased once a claim has already occurred. We encourage you to have the policy taken out for the entire tenancy period to have full cover. If the tenancy lasts longer than a year, it's worth renewing or purchasing a new policy.

How do I make a claim on tenant insurance?

A claim can be made by either the insured (the tenant) or the injured party (the landlord). The claim should be reported within 7 days from the moment the damage occurred or was noticed. You can make the report through your simpl.rent account – just fill in the form and attach the required documentation. Your report will be forwarded to the claims department, and you will receive an individual case number by email.

Are claims caused by pets covered?

Yes, tenant insurance applies to damage caused by pets to third parties (e.g. the landlord or a neighbour). For example, when your dog chews the table legs, or your cat scratches the landlord's sofa.

Which tenant insurance bundle should I choose?

The choice depends on the level of cover needed. The basic bundle contains only tenant liability insurance, meaning protection against accidental damage caused to third parties. However, it does not include protection for personal belongings or legal assistance. At the purchasing stage you can also adjust the liability sum insured. A higher sum guarantees greater financial stability in the event of a claim, as for more serious incidents the lowest limit may prove insufficient.
